HOLLY — Declaring shortly after breakfast that he intended to “do absolutely nothing” with his Labor Day, Holly resident Eric Brindle was observed 43 minutes later standing on a ladder with a cordless drill.

Brindle, 42, said he had only gone outside to move a garden hose before noticing that one of the brackets holding a section of gutter had come loose. He stressed that tightening the bracket did not constitute a project and that he remained fully committed to taking the day off.

After replacing the bracket, Brindle stepped back to inspect the repair and noticed a green film spreading across the siding beneath it. He initially attempted to ignore the discoloration before deciding it would take “like ten minutes” to pressure wash the affected area.

The pressure washer was retrieved from the garage, where Brindle discovered he could not reach it without moving several boxes that had been sitting near the door since spring. By the time the siding was clean, the boxes had been moved into the driveway and the garage looked noticeably worse than when he started.

Brindle stood in the doorway for several minutes before concluding that the real problem was a lack of storage.

At 1:46 p.m., he left for Ace Hardware to purchase what he described as “just a couple bins.” He returned with enough shelving and storage containers to reorganize most of the garage.

By late afternoon, Brindle had installed the shelving and begun sorting the contents of the displaced boxes, periodically holding up individual objects and asking his family why they still owned them before placing most of them back into newly labeled containers.

At 6:38 p.m., Brindle’s wife asked whether he still planned to relax at any point during the holiday. Brindle, kneeling on the garage floor beside a pile of extension cords, said he was “basically done.”

He finished shortly after 8 p.m., walked outside to admire the newly organized garage, and noticed the pressure washer was still sitting in the driveway.

Brindle is expected to return to work Tuesday, where sources said he hopes to spend most of the morning sitting down.
