HOLLY — A local candidate suspended his campaign this week after voters concluded his sad clown persona had become a problem.
The candidate’s final appearance came near Village offices, where he stood silently in full clown makeup holding wilted flowers and a limp balloon dog. Residents said the message was not entirely clear, but it did not suggest progress.
Campaign aides said the look was meant to show that the candidate understood how residents felt. Voters said it mostly showed that he was a clown.
Support reportedly slipped as the candidate continued appearing around town in face paint and oversized shoes. Parents said children were not scared, just sad.
In a short statement, the campaign said the candidate remained committed to results, but acknowledged that the clown approach “was not connecting.”
Election officials confirmed the withdrawal paperwork was accepted without issue and said remaining candidates are still free to embarrass themselves in more traditional ways.
